WHAT IT IS
A root canal is needed when damage occurs to a tooth’s pulp. This can happen due to injury or due to severe tooth decay. A root canal can be an alternative to a tooth extraction and is an effective way of eliminating tooth aches.
While root canal can take two or more appointments, our dentists will work to make each appointment as comfortable as possible. The extent of the procedure and its effectiveness will depend on how extensive the tooth damage is. During the treatment, the area is assessed, the damaged and/or dead pulp is removed and then the area is sealed.
- Relief from symptoms of infection, including pain, gum swelling and difficulty in eating.
- If the infection is left untreated, it can cause the tooth to loosen, putting it at risk of requiring extraction or even falling out of its own accord. Root canal therapy can prevent this from happening.
