What is obesity?
Someone who is obese has put on weight to the point that it could seriously endanger their health. Currently, obesity in the UAE is increasing – over half of women, and about two thirds of men are either overweight or obese. Childhood obesity is a growing concern.
The health risks of obesity include heath disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and osteoarthritis. Deaths linked to obesity shorten life by nine years on average.
Many people now lead a sedentary lifestyle and eat more calories than they use – so it’s more important than ever to be aware of the risks of becoming overweight.
What’s so bad about being overweight?
Beside the unattractive look of the obese person, he or she has an increased chance of heart attacks, stroke, cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, back and knee problems, stretch marks, varicose veins, and yeast infections.
In addition to health problems, obese people face social barriers affecting their marriage and their career.
Genes are only one factor:
Statistics show that few persons can successfully lose weight and keep it off using well power alone. Obesity is multi-factorial problem affected by heredity, psychology and behavior.
It is important to keep in mind that by definition obesity is an excess of fat storage rather than weight (which could be excess muscles).
Why does our program work?
It is achieved using nutritionally adequate and well balanced diet that is tailored to meet your individual needs. This makes the dieting process rather easy to follow without any suffering or starvation. What matters most is how many kilograms you lose, and not from where you are losing them.
Our success with the harder part, the long-term maintenance, stems from our reliance on a comprehensive program addressing lifestyle and behavior changes, exercise tips, attitude corrections, healthy relationships, identifying and treating stress, anxiety or depression and a simplified and practical education about nutrition.
Obesity, it is not just about diet and exercise
The above are examples of what you would learn in our Weight Reduction Program.
HABITS NOT DIETS: we show you the way at CosmeSurge.
The role of the Dietician
The dietician plays an important role in the care of obese patients. The dietician evaluates seven day food records and according to the individual composition of the diet gives dietary advice to the patient. The energy content and macronutrient and micronutrient composition is only one aspect of dietary counseling. Knowledge of patient’s family and economic status as well as his usual eating pattern, his tastes and capabilities of person who does the shopping and cooking are necessary before the diet can be recommended. The balance energy-restricted diet is used, predominantly with reduction of the fat intake. Energy expenditure in individual patients is considered when the diet is planned. The regular controls by a dietitian are essential in the long term treatment of obesity.
The role of Gastric Bands
LAP-BAND in the most common form of weight loss surgery in Europe and Australia. Recently approved by the US FDA, it is usually performed laparoscopically.
It is of the least invasive approaches to obesity because neither the stomach nor the intestine is cut. To date more then 25,000 LAP-BAND surgeries have been performed. Since the Lap-BAND is implantable using minimal-invasive techniques (“keyhole techniques”), patients that are extremely obese with heightened surgical risks benefit from the conservative entry to the abdominal cavity. Due to the absence of upper abdominal incisions, the incidence of wound-healing complications, wound infections, postoperative pain as well as incisional hernias are drastically reduced. In addition, this method is cosmetically advantageous due to the absence of a large scar and it is fully reversible. The absence of lasting modifications to the anatomy of the intestinal tract allows for relatively easy restoration to the original state by simply removing the band, which can be done using laparoscopic techniques in most cases.
Advantages:
Simple and relatively safe
Short recovery period
Chance of major complication is low
No opening or removal of any part of the stomach or intestines
No altering of the natural anatomy
Very short recovery period
Success rate is highest when:
You choose the right surgeon
You chose the right surgical hospital such as Emirates Hospital in Jumeirah
Commit to good follow-up after surgery and follow instructions.
Address all other hormone imbalances, sleep and emotional issues.
Emirates Hospital is a leader in gastric bands. The procedure is done in about one hour and you go home usually next day.
The role of Gastric Balloons
BIB is a soft, silicone balloon that is inserted into the stomach and filled with sterile saline. With the balloon you will have a feeling of satiety, or lack of hunger. The balloon will be removed after six months. The first week you will be on a liquid diet with instructions to drink plenty of fluids. After the first week, you can begin a solid diet with recommendation from your doctor.
Advantages:
The BIB program has several advantages over other weight loss plans, with the BIB you can:
Have a feeling of satiety
Lose more weight than with other diet programs
Be supported by your doctor expertise
Learn principles for long-term success
Have the benefits of a non-surgical, non-pharmaceutical approach.
What results can you expect?
We had a long experience with the BIB. Only one out of four patients lost weight and kept the weight off after the removal of their balloon. Those who succeeded were the ones who were the most motivated (took up regular exercise, changed their nutritional habits including avoiding high glycemic index food and had no emotional eating issues).
Gastroenterologists who push the balloon do so frequently because it is the only tool they have (when your carpenter’s only tool is a hammer, everything looks like a nail to him). At CosmeSurge and Emirates hospital we offer honest advice and a full range of tools to choose from.
